Where Else Do Target Customers Shop?

Retail Giant Target is a go-to stop for many shoppers — and it’s often just one spot where consumers are spending money during a given shopping excursion.

Where else are Target shoppers spending money, before and after they make purchases at the red bullseye big box store?

Facteus transaction data answers that question, pulling back the curtain on retail shopping trends, consumer behaviors, and so much more.

Retail Consumer Spending Before & After Target Shopping

Analyzing card transaction data, Facteus tracked the consumer spending journey focused around Target.

We looked at where dozens of customers shopped within an hour of making Target purchases, examining info from the largest transaction data panel in the alternative data industry — and including card transaction data from debit cards, credit cards, and other payment methods.

We found that, within an hour of shopping at Target…

Most Target customers are buying food.

Nearly 1 in 5 customers goes out to eat or grocery shops before or after visiting Target.

In fact, more than 1 in 10 Target shoppers (13%) go out to eat, visiting casual dining establishments, before or after a Target run.

Roughly 11% pair their Target runs with grocery shopping, hitting up supermarkets and grocery stores before or after their Target shopping.

Retail and department store shopping is also popular.

Target customers will also engage in some general retail therapy before and after they drop dough at the red bullseye retailer. Specifically, about 8% of Target customers will do some general retail shopping while another 5% will spend at department stores.

This finding, though not shocking on the surface, makes a lot more sense in light of the fact that many Target stores are attached to or nearby malls and retail shopping centers.

Many go on the hunt for bargains.

About 10% of Target customers end up at warehouse stores or discount retailers, where deals and low prices are the name of the game.

In fact, approximately 5% of Target shoppers ended up at either a warehouse store, like Costco or Sam’s Club, or a discount retailer, like TJ Maxx or Dollar Tree.

Some are gassing up.

Roughly 5% of shoppers stop at gas stations on their way to or from Target.
